Cheng-Hock Toh, Chair at National Blood Transfusion Committee,Professor of Medical Haematology at the University of Liverpool and Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
”Why transfusion, anticoagulation and blood errors happen
Why do transfusion systems struggle?
Because transfusion is seen as a process, not as haematology.
Why do anticoagulation errors happen?
Because clotting is seen as a protocol, not as haematology.
Why are blood results misinterpreted every day across the NHS?
Because pathology is seen as a report, not as a clinical specialty.
These are not separate problems.
They are symptoms of the same issue:
The quiet central role of haematology is not recognised in how healthcare is designed.”
