Tareq Abadl: Quick Clinical Interpretation of Hepatitis B Markers

“Hepatitis B Markers – Quick Clinical Interpretation.

HBsAg (Surface Antigen)

  • Indicates ACTIVE infection
  • Present in acute and chronic HBV
  • If positive, the patient is infectious

Anti-HBs (Surface Antibody)

  • Protective antibody
  • Indicates immunity
  • Seen in recovered or vaccinated individuals

Anti-HBc (Core Antibody)

  • IgM indicates Acute infection
  • IgG indicates Past or chronic infection
  • NOT present after vaccination

Common Patterns:

  • HBsAg + | Anti-HBs – | Anti-HBc + indicates Active infection
  • HBsAg – | Anti-HBs + | Anti-HBc – indicates Vaccinated
  • HBsAg – | Anti-HBs + | Anti-HBc + indicates Recovered infection

Always interpret markers in combination.
