Tareq Abadl, Medical Laboratory Specialist and Director of the Blood Bank at Dr. Abdelkader Al-Mutawakkil Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Hepatitis B Markers – Quick Clinical Interpretation.
HBsAg (Surface Antigen)
- Indicates ACTIVE infection
- Present in acute and chronic HBV
- If positive, the patient is infectious
Anti-HBs (Surface Antibody)
- Protective antibody
- Indicates immunity
- Seen in recovered or vaccinated individuals
Anti-HBc (Core Antibody)
- IgM indicates Acute infection
- IgG indicates Past or chronic infection
- NOT present after vaccination
Common Patterns:
- HBsAg + | Anti-HBs – | Anti-HBc + indicates Active infection
- HBsAg – | Anti-HBs + | Anti-HBc – indicates Vaccinated
- HBsAg – | Anti-HBs + | Anti-HBc + indicates Recovered infection
Always interpret markers in combination.
