Nameer Ascandar: Outcomes After GI Bleeding in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and AF on Long-Term Oral Anticoagulation
Nameer Ascandar, Internal Medicine Resident Physician at HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
”Excited to share our second publication of the month!
This study examined outcomes after gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and atrial fibrillation on long-term oral anticoagulation.
We found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis hospitalized for GI bleeding while on anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation had significantly worse in-hospital outcomes, including higher mortality and greater risk of septic shock compared to those without RA.
Interestingly, RA patients had lower rates of acute ischemic stroke and reduced need for blood transfusion, highlighting the complex balance between thrombosis and bleeding in this population.”
