Farjah Hassan Algahtani: How Can We Better Identify Patients at Risk of Blood Clots after Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery?
Farjah Hassan Algahtani, Director Epidiomolgy and Public health Research Chair at King Saud University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Surgeries, adding:
“How can we better identify patients at risk of blood clots after metabolic and bariatric surgery?
In our recently published study, we reviewed outcomes for 1,414 patients treated at King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh.
Six patients experienced a documented postoperative venous thrombosis.
A history of previous #thrombosis was associated with these events, reinforcing its importance in assessing risk before #surgery.
Preoperative #hemoglobin levels were similar in patients with and without an event.
For patient care, these findings support careful review of #thrombosis history and individualized planning around surgery.
Better risk assessment may help guide prevention and follow-up, with the long-term goal of reducing serious complications and preventable deaths.
Because only six events occurred, larger studies are needed to confirm the findings and refine how we identify at-risk patients.
