Rana Jaber: Uncovering Cardiovascular Harm in Waterpipe Smoking
Rana Jaber, Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she authored, adding:
“I am delighted to share my recent published editorial at American Journal of Preventive Cardiology. I underscored the importance of raising awareness regarding waterpipe smoking safety and the common belief that it is a safer alternative to cigarettes.
This editorial is discussing findings from a recent longitudinal study that shows a relationship between waterpipe smoking and cardiovascular mortality providing the first temporal evidence. This relationship is stronger among dual waterpipe-cigarette smokers.
Importantly, a higher effect was observed when alcohol is added to the equation suggesting an additive or a synergistic effect that needs to be further investigated considering previous notions that mild alcohol use has potential cardiovascular protective effects. Similar to cigarettes , waterpipe is smoking, is harmful and should be included in tobacco control policies to curb its use. For more read the article”
