Suvro Sankha Datta: IVIG-Induced Hemolysis and the Role of ABO Antibodies
Suvro Sankha Datta, Senior Consultant and Head Transfusion Medicine at Tata Medical Center, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
“IVIG is generally considered a safe product.
However, IVIG-induced hemolysis is increasingly reported in non-O blood group patients, particularly in children and in the presence of underlying inflammatory conditions.
IVIG contains ABO antibodies (IgG2 type), but the level of ABO antibodies is not provided by manufacturers, which should be below 1:64 according to the international guidelines.
The standard hemagglutination technique is not suitable for ABO antibody estimation in IVIG; therefore, the new bead-based glycan assay measuring ABO antibodies, including their subclasses, should be used as part of manufacturer quality control for commercially available IVIG products. The final titer value should be displayed over the product label.”
