Piotr Czempik: Hidden Platelet Dysfunction in Sepsis and Septic Shock

Piotr Czempik, Chair of Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Medical University of Silesia, shared on LinkedIn about his recent article published in Hemato, adding:

”Proud to share the latest publication: ‘Platelet Function and Morphology in Patients with Sepsis and Septic Shock: A Retrospective Pilot Study’.

Sepsis remains one of the most challenging conditions in intensive care medicine.

While thrombocytopenia is a well‑known prognostic marker, this study explores a deeper question:

Can platelet function and morphology provide additional insight into sepsis severity?

Key findings:

  • Platelet aggregation was impaired across multiple assays despite normal platelet counts and morphology.
  • ROTEM‑derived platelet contribution to clot strength remained within normal limits.
  • No association was found between platelet function/morphology and ICU mortality.
  • An inverse correlation emerged between ROTEM platelet contribution and SOFA score – suggesting a potential link to sepsis severity.

Takeaway:
Functional platelet deficits may occur even when structural parameters appear normal.

This opens the door to refining how we assess coagulation and inflammation in septic patients.”
