Maia Meier’s Journey: Raising Awareness for Women Living Without a Diagnosis – European Haemophilia Consortium
European Haemophilia Consortium (EHC) posted on LinkedIn:
“Imagine spending years not knowing why your body bleeds the way it does.
For millions of women across Europe, that isn’t a hypothetical. It’s reality.
Most women with a bleeding disorder in Europe don’t get their diagnosis until they’re 16.
And if there’s no family history to raise a red flag? That rises to 17.
The EHC’s most recent survey of women and girls with bleeding disorders makes this even clearer: nearly half of respondents were not diagnosed until after the age of 18, and almost 1 in 3 waited more than a decade for an accurate, final diagnosis.
These are not just statistics. Behind every number is a woman who was told her symptoms were normal. A teenager who bled heavily during her first period was dismissed.
A patient whose condition went unmanaged throughout her reproductive life.
Early diagnosis changes outcomes. Not just clinically, but also in terms of quality of life, reproductive choices, and the ability to plan. A woman who knows her diagnosis has access to treatment. A woman who doesn’t is left to manage on her own.
This June, Maia Meier climbs Mont Blanc as the first expedition of a journey across all seven summits to raise global awareness of the critical importance of timely diagnosis and care for women with bleeding disorders.
As a proud partner, the EHC is sharing stories, expert voices, and perspectives from across Europe.
