Reinhold Kreutz: Cardiovascular Burden in Acute Intermittent Porphyria Needs Greater Awareness
Reinhold Kreutz, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Hypertension at Charite, Past President of the European Society of Hypertension, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in European Journal of Internal Medicine, adding:
”Excited to share our new paper on cardiovascular complications in acute intermittent porphyria (AIP)!
Our study highlights another important link between hypertension and a rare but clinically significant condition associated with multiple cardiometabolic and cardiovascular complications.
We found that patients with AIP have a markedly higher prevalence of hypertension, abnormal nocturnal blood pressure profiles, and cardiac structural changes, with rising even further during acute attacks.
These findings reinforce the need for greater awareness of cardiovascular risk assessment and long-term monitoring in patients with AIP.
Hypertension in rare metabolic diseases may still be underrecognized, yet it could play a key role in future clinical management, multidisciplinary care, and research directions.
Proud to collaborate with an outstanding international team on this work.”
