Abdurrahmaan Ali Suei Elbuzidi: What is the Optimal Anticoagulation Monitoring Target in ECMO?
Abdurrahmaan Ali Suei Elbuzidi, ECMO and Critical Care Consultant at Hamad Medical Corporation, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, adding:
“Excited to share that our latest systematic review and meta-analysis has been published:
‘Clinical Outcomes of Different Heparin Anticoagulation Monitoring Targets in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.’
This work explores an important and ongoing challenge in ECMO care:
What is the optimal anticoagulation monitoring target?
Despite widespread use of unfractionated heparin in ECMO, significant variability remains in monitoring strategies (ACT, aPTT, anti-Xa, and others), with potential implications for bleeding, thrombosis, and overall patient outcomes.
Our review aimed to synthesize the available evidence and evaluate how different monitoring targets may influence clinical outcomes.
Proud to have collaborated with an outstanding multidisciplinary team of colleagues on this project.Special thanks to all co-authors for their dedication and contributions.
Looking forward to continued research that helps refine anticoagulation strategies and improve outcomes for ECMO patients.”
