Renal Papillary Necrosis (RPN) refers to ischemic damage and necrosis of the renal papillae in the kidneys.
It is an important topic in pathology, nephrology, and medical entrance examinations.
Easy Mnemonic to Remember Causes:
‘POSTCARD‘
Each letter represents a major cause:
P — Pyelonephritis
O — Obstruction of urinary tract
S — Sickle cell disease
T — Tuberculosis
C — Cirrhosis/Chronic liver disease
A — Analgesic abuse
R — Renal vein thrombosis
D — Diabetes mellitus
Key Clinical Features:
- Hematuria (blood in urine)
- Flank pain
- Fever
- Dysuria
- Passage of necrotic tissue in urine
Why Is It Important?
