“Understanding Pancytopenia in Medical Coding
Pancytopenia occurs when all three blood cell lines are decreased:
- RBC
- WBC
- Platelets
Quick coding concept:
- If Thrombocytopenia plus Neutropenia plus Anaemia are documented together to Code Pancytopenia
- If only any two conditions are documented – Code separately
Knowing root words like -penia (decrease) and – cytosis (increase) helps improve coding accuracy and clinical understanding.”
