Raising Awareness of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis in Women – NBCA
National Blood Clot Alliance shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A severe headache isn’t always ‘just a headache.’
During Women’s Health Month, the National Blood Clot Alliance is shining a light on a rare but serious type of blood clot called Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST) — a clot that forms in the veins that drain blood from the brain.
CVST occurs more often in women and can be associated with risk factors like:
- Hormonal birth control
- Pregnancy and the postpartum period
- Certain clotting disorders
- Chronic inflammatory conditions
Symptoms can develop over hours or days and may include:
- Severe headache
- Vision changes
- Seizures
- Weakness or numbness
- Difficulty speaking
- Confusion
Because CVST symptoms can sometimes mimic migraine or other neurological conditions, delays in diagnosis can happen — making awareness especially important.
That’s why NBCA has launched a new educational resource to help patients and families better understand:
- Signs and symptoms
- Risk factors
- Diagnosis and treatment
- Recovery and long-term outlook
Learn more and explore the new CVST resource.”
