Marina Tarunina: Engineered Platelets From Human iPSCs Support Haemostasis Without Thromboembolism
Marina Tarunina, Research Director at Plasticell Limited, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Thrombosis Research, adding:
“We are pleased to share a new publication from Plasticell’s research team in Thrombosis Research: ‘Human iPSC-Derived Platelets Generated in Alginate Scaffolds Exhibit Functional Haemostasis In Vitro and In Vivo.’
This study is the result of a successful collaboration between Plasticell and Professor Clive Page and Professor Simon Pitchford team at King’s College London.
The research presents a scalable approach for generating mature megakaryocytes and platelets from human induced pluripotent stem cells using Plasticell’s high-throughput CombiCult® platform and alginate-based 3D culture systems.
Importantly, the resulting platelets demonstrated key functional properties, including activation, clot formation and pro-coagulant activity in vitro.
In a murine model, iPSC-derived platelets supported haemostasis without evidence of thrombo-embolism.
This work represents a step toward controlled, cost-effective platelet production for transfusion and regenerative medicine applications.
