Javed Anees: TIA is a Medical Emergency – Not a Benign Warning
Javed Anees, Medical Consultant at Government of Kerala, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“TIA is a Medical Emergency – Not a Benign Warning.
A transient ischemic attack (TIA) offers a brief but critical opportunity to prevent a potentially disabling stroke.
Nearly half of recurrent strokes after a TIA occur within the first 48 hours, making rapid recognition and timely intervention essential.
I have prepared this educational infographic summarizing the practical approach to TIA risk stratification, including:
- ABCD² score-the classic bedside risk assessment tool
- ABCD³ and ABCD³-I scores – incorporating recurrent TIAs, MRI-DWI findings, and carotid stenosis for improved risk prediction
- Immediate diagnostic evaluation and evidence-based secondary prevention
- Important limitations of relying solely on ABCD² in modern stroke practice
While risk scores are useful for early assessment, they should never replace urgent specialist evaluation, neuroimaging, vascular imaging, and appropriate secondary prevention.
I hope this infographic serves as a concise learning resource for medical students, residents, physicians, and neurology trainees involved in acute stroke care.
Feedback and academic discussion are always welcome.”
