Christian Heiss: Why Better Models are the Next Frontier in Vascular Ageing
Christian Heiss, Associate Head of Medical School (Research and Innovation) at the University of Surrey, Professor and NHS Consultant in Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Vascular ageing is not just a clinical observation – it is a biology we need to model better.
Our new review in Ageing Research Reviews discusses experimental model systems to study vascular ageing, from cell culture and ex vivo vessels to animal models, organ-on-chip systems and bioengineered platforms.
Each model captures different aspects of ageing biology – endothelial dysfunction, vascular smooth muscle cell changes, extracellular matrix remodelling, inflammation and senescence – but none captures the whole picture alone.
Better models are essential if we want to move from describing vascular ageing to understanding mechanisms and testing interventions that preserve vascular health across the life course.”
