Herman Sandeep Prakasam: Who Is Missing Anticoagulation?
Herman Sandeep Prakasam, Lead – Clinical Research Strategist at Thrombosis Research Institute, London, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in PLOS One, adding:
“The primary report of the GARDENIA registry has been published!
This is the first patient registry to focus on atrial fibrillation patients at high stroke risk who are deemed unsuitable to receive anticoagulation.
Epidemiological data have long pointed to a substantial treatment gap in this population. But building a registry to identify these patients proved far harder.
This led us to prematurely terminate the recruitment.
Nevertheless, by analysing the registry data in combination with the GARFIELD risk prediction tool, this manuscript provides clinicians with further evidence of the net clinical benefit of sustained anticoagulation in this high-risk group
Operationally, executing this study exposed real-world challenges in identifying and reaching high-risk AF patients who would most benefit from emerging antithrombotics.”
