Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors Have Transformed Cancer Treatment – RPTH Journal
RPTH Journal shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Anniek Strijdhorst et al, adding:
“Immune checkpoint inhibitors and thrombosis: are antiphospholipid antibodies to blame?
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have transformed cancer treatment, but they are associated with an increased risk of both venous and arterial thromboembolism. The mechanisms behind this remain poorly understood.
One hypothesis: ICI therapy might trigger the development of antiphospholipid antibodies, leading to hypercoagulability.
A new prospective study from the ITHACA cohort, published in RPTH Journal, puts this hypothesis to the test.
- Key findings from 40 patients assessed before and after 3 months of ICI therapy:
- No significant development of antiphospholipid antibody positivity after 3 months (8% at baseline vs 5% at 3 months)
- No patients developed a positive lupus anticoagulant
- Thrombin generation remained unchanged
- Only 1 patient developed VTE during follow-up
The short-term thrombotic risk associated with ICI therapy does not appear to be mediated by antiphospholipid antibodies, pointing researchers toward other mechanisms that still need to be uncovered.”
