Henning Hermanns: Are We Really Making Progress in Patient Blood Management?
Henning Hermanns, Cardiac and pediatric anesthesiologist at Amsterdam UMC, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, adding:
“We are not there yet when it comes to patient blood management.
In our recently published nationwide study of more than 100,000 cardiac surgical procedures, we observed that despite increasing attention to PBM, perioperative transfusion and coagulation product use has not decreased over time.
This should make us think.
Guidelines and recommendations alone may not be enough.
Without continued surveillance, feedback and vigilance, their impact may fade over time.
PBM should perhaps be seen less as something we implement once, and more as something we need to keep measuring and improving.
Our study in Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.”
