Hanaa Aldossari: Exploring Bacterial Screening of Platelet Units
Hanaa Aldossari, Medical Laboratory Intern at Hera General Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Bacterial Screening of Platelet Units
Platelet bacterial screening is performed to detect possible bacterial contamination in platelet units and ensure transfusion safety
How does the test work?
A sample is collected from the platelet unit and inoculated into an Enrichment Media, a nutrient-rich medium that supports the growth of bacteria if present
Since platelet units are stored at room temperature with continuous agitation, they are more susceptible to bacterial growth than other blood components
If bacteria are present, they multiply in the enrichment media and can then be detected, helping prevent the transfusion of contaminated platelet units
This test plays an important role in enhancing patient safety and maintaining the quality of blood products.”
