The Cell in Your Bone Marrow Responsible for Making Platelets – ITP Support Association

ITP Support Association shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Meet the megakaryocyte: the cell in your bone marrow responsible for making platelets.

In many people with ITP, antibodies and other lymphocytes attack these cells directly, causing them to die off before they can do their job.

This is where TPO receptor agonists (like eltrombopag) come in.

Dr David Kuter explains how they bind to a receptor on the megakaryocyte’s surface, keeping the cell alive so it can keep producing platelets, tackling the production side of ITP.

Destruction and production: two different problems, two different kinds of treatment.”
