Katja van den Hurk: Building a Pan European Transfusion Research Infrastructure

Katja van den Hurk, Head of Donor Studies at Sanquin, shared European Blood Alliance‘s post post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Vox Sanguinis, adding:

“Very happy to see this work published!

There clearly is still a lot of work to do before we have a ‘Pan-European Transfusion Research InfrAstructure’ (PETRA), but step by step we will get there, for the benefit of donors and patients.

Thank you very much European Blood Alliance for funding this project, Sophie Wehrens for your hard work on the project, and Simon Stanworth, Suzanne Fustolo-Gunnink, Christian Erikstrup, Mikko Arvas, Emanuele Di Angelantonio, Allison Waters, Matea Vinkovic Vlah, Louise Ørnskov Drechsler for the great input and collaboration!

“We are delighted to see this publication! The ‘Pan-European Transfusion Research InfrAstructure’ (PETRA) project was developed as a practical starting point for the development of pan-European ‘vein-to-vein’ research infrastructure.

Ultimately, this infrastructure will facilitate efficient research, effective benchmarking, and ultimately improved transfusion care and donor and patient outcomes across Europe.

PETRA has provided a very useful description of the landscape of existing donor and blood establishment databases, as well as the main challenges and possibilities for linking these datasets with information on the associated blood products and transfusion recipients, and donors’ own health records.
