Mohamed Tawengi: Balancing Bleeding and Coronary Thrombosis in STEMI With ITP

Mohamed Tawengi, Internal Medicine Resident at Hamad Medical Corporation, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in JACC: Case Reports, adding:

”Excited to share our newly published case report in JACC: Case Reports:

‘Managing Acute STEMI in the Setting of Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura: A Therapeutic Dilemma.’

This case highlights a challenging clinical paradox: severe thrombocytopenia does not eliminate the risk of thrombosis. Managing an acute STEMI in a patient with ITP requires carefully balancing the competing risks of bleeding and coronary thrombosis, particularly when making decisions around revascularization and antiplatelet therapy.

In our case, an individualized multidisciplinary approach allowed successful reperfusion while limiting the required duration of dual antiplatelet therapy.

Grateful to my co-authors Khaleed Jemmieh, Jawaher Baraka, Fathima Mahmood, Fatima Alzahraa Alhaj Akeel, Abdelkarim Alammora, and Ghith Choura for the collaboration and effort behind this work.”
