‘Alkem’s Community-Centric Fight Against Anemia in Rural Bihar’
The case is now available through Harvard Business Publishing Education.
Co-authored by: Ujjawal Agarwal, Shubham Mishra, Alok Raj, Dr. Ashok Priyadarshi, Rajesh Kumar, and Prateek Sharma.
The case examines the Alkem Anaemia Mukti Abhiyaan (AAMA), a community-centric initiative designed to address anemia in rural Bihar.
The initiative brings together:
- Alkem Foundation
- Bihar Voluntary Health Association (BVHA)
- Government health infrastructure
- ASHA workers, ANMs, and Anganwadi workers
- Schools and self-help groups
- Local communities
The intervention combines:
- Digital hemoglobin screening
- Iron-folic acid supplementation
- Nutrition counselling
- Community mobilisation
- Referral support
- Sustained follow-up
- Behavioural-change interventions
The early results are encouraging.
Adolescent girls screened: 223 to 1,707
Anemia prevalence among screened adolescent girls: 52.5 percent to 20.8 percent
But greater screening also uncovered more previously undetected cases, and that creates the central managerial dilemma of the case:
Should AAMA scale rapidly?
Should it first consolidate and strengthen the Hathua model?
Or should the intervention be redesigned into a lighter, more scalable model without losing the intensive community engagement that made it effective?
