Khusi Dhara: Why Women Need to Pay Attention to Iron

Khusi Dhara, Nutrition Student  at Howrah J.C Girls school, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Constant fatigue, recurring brain fog, and unexplained midday burnout aren’t always signs that you need more coffee.

For many women, it is a silent, overlooked nutritional gap: iron deficiency.

Due to monthly menstrual cycles, women and young girls lose significant amounts of iron regularly.

Combined with demanding work schedules, restrictive dieting, or rushed meals, iron deficiency anemia remains one of the most widespread—yet frequently normalized—health issues affecting focus, energy, and daily performance.

When iron levels dip, oxygen delivery to muscles and the brain slows down. What looks like ‘burnout’ or ‘lack of motivation’ is often simply cellular exhaustion.

Building reliable iron reserves doesn’t always require synthetic pills—it starts on your plate:

  • Plant-Based Staples: Lentils, kidney beans, chickpeas, and quinoa offer reliable non-heme iron along with fiber and sustained complex carbs.
  • Greens and Seeds: Spinach and pumpkin seeds make easy, dense daily additions to lunch bowls or midday snacks.
  • Smart Swaps: High-cocoa dark chocolate and tofu provide versatile nutrient density.
  • Animal Sources: Lean red meat delivers highly bioavailable heme iron for efficient absorption.

A Clinical Tip for Daily Life:
Plant-based (non-heme) iron needs a catalyst. Pair foods like spinach, lentils, or beans with Vitamin C (lemon juice, bell peppers, amla, or citrus) to maximize absorption.

Avoid drinking tea or coffee directly with meals, as tannins significantly block iron uptake.

Prioritizing your micronutrients isn’t a wellness trend—it is fundamental fuel for your productivity and vitality.

Have you checked your ferritin or hemoglobin levels recently?”
