Suswapna Singh Rawat: The Role of Platelets in Heart Disease and Antiplatelet Therapy

Suswapna Singh Rawat,Physician shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Platelets play a crucial role in managing ruptures within blood vessels and contributing to blockages in smaller vessels.

While they are essential for clotting, in cases of established heart disease, stents, or bypasses, reducing their activity becomes vital.

Antiplatelet medications like aspirin, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, and ticagrelor are instrumental in these scenarios.

They work by making blood less prone to clotting and aggregation, thereby easing passage through blockages.

For individuals without existing heart conditions, platelets have a less pronounced role, but for those with diagnosed heart disease or recent interventions, these medications are critical.

Management of heart disease is multifactorial, involving measures to reduce blood pressure, inflammation, and LDL cholesterol, alongside controlling platelet activity.”
