Alexander Hof: Species-Specific Roles of MPO Deficiency
Alexander Hof, Cardiologist at University Hospital Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Redox Biology, adding:
“Delighted to share our latest research on conserved and species-specific effects of Myeloperoxidase deficiency on Neutrophil biology, just published in the field’s leading journal Redox Biology.
11,608 patients were screened to systematically characterize MPO deficiency in humans.
Persistent and transient MPO deficiency differ – persistent deficiency was associated with markedly reduced MPO protein, activity, and plasma levels.
Human and mouse neutrophils share core biological responses, despite substantial species-specific differences.
Different signaling pathways drive similar functions: MAPK/cytokine pathways predominated in humans, while Rho-GTPase signaling was more prominent in mice.
Key translational message: Similar biological outcomes do not necessarily mean identical mechanisms — an important consideration when translating MPO-targeted therapies from animal models to patients.”
