Eman M. Elsabbagh: Successful HCT Does Not End at Engraftment
Eman M. Elsabbagh, Physician Scientist, Director at CITADEL Lab, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Pediatric Annals, adding:
“‘Successful HCT does not end at engraftment’
Children transplanted for nonmalignant disorders may live for decades after HCT, making long-term surveillance, immune recovery, vaccination, organ health, psychosocial care, and coordination with primary pediatric teams essential parts of transplant success.
In our review, ‘Shared Care After Pediatric Nonmalignant Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation,’ we discuss how transplant centers and community pediatric teams can work together to support children well beyond the early post-transplant period.
The goal is not only survival after HCT, but durable health, development, and quality of life throughout childhood and beyond.
I’m grateful to Augusto Dulanto Chiang for bringing his infectious diseases expertise and perspective to this work, and especially proud of our junior authors, Ahmed Ayman, Ahmed Ibrahim, and Ahmed Elhadidy whose energy and thoughtful contributions helped shape the manuscript.
It has been a pleasure working with this team, and I hope this is one of many publications ahead for Ayman and Ahmed.
