Alexandros Makis: When Microcytic Anemia Has an Inherited Cause
Alexandros Makis, Professor of Pediatrics/Pediatric Hematology at Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Ioannina, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in HemaSphere, adding:
“I am pleased to share our recently published review in HemaSphere, the official journal of the European Hematology Association:
‘Inherited microcytic anemias due to disorders of iron and heme metabolism: An updated clinical review’. It was a great pleasure to work on this review together with Eleftheria Hatzimichael and Ioanna Saougou.
Microcytic anemia is one of the most common findings in everyday hematology practice and is usually related to iron deficiency or thalassemia.
However, a small but clinically important group of patients have rare inherited disorders affecting iron metabolism, iron transport, or heme synthesis, which may represent a considerable diagnostic challenge.
In this review, we aimed to provide an updated and clinically oriented overview of these disorders, integrating their molecular basis with characteristic laboratory patterns, diagnostic strategies, and current therapeutic approaches.
We hope that this practical approach will be useful to hematologists, pediatricians, and other clinicians facing patients with persistent, unexplained, familial, or iron-refractory microcytic anemia.”
