Rabiya Masood: Breaking the Cycle of Thalassemia Through Screening
Rabiya Masood, Assistant Professor at Bakhtawar Amin Memorial Trust Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today i delivered a lecture about genetic disorders, screening, and prevention to my mbbs students Bakhtawar Amin Medical and Dental College, Multan.
Thalassemia isn’t an abstract topic for me.
It’s something my dearest friend has lived with.
The hospital visits, the transfusions, the quiet exhaustion that comes with a disease that never really lets you rest.
So when I stood in front of my students today, I wasn’t just teaching preventive medicine, I was telling them: this disease is preventable.
A simple blood test before marriage (a CBC, a hemoglobin electrophoresis ) can tell two people whether they’re both carriers.
That one conversation, that one test, can change the entire future of a family.
Pakistan has one of the highest rates of cousin marriage in the world, and with it, one of the highest thalassemia burdens.
Nearly 5,000 children are born with thalassemia major here every year – many of them into families who never knew they were carriers until it was too late.
If there’s one thing I want every student and every family reading this to walk away with, it’s this: ‘get screened before you marry’.
It’s a five-minute test that could spare a child a lifetime of struggle, and spare a family the pain.”
