Sara Al Dallal: Transforming Hemophilia Care Across the Gulf

Sara Al Dallal, President of Emirates Health Economics Society at Emirates Medical Association, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Global Hematology, adding:

“Hemophilia care in the Gulf.

I’m pleased to share our new paper in Blood Global Hematology, ‘Transforming hemophilia care in the Gulf region: a patient journey and policy framework.’

Some numbers behind the case for action:

  • Only approximatelly 42% of people with hemophilia are estimated to be diagnosed across the Eastern Mediterranean region.
  • Reported prevalence ranges from 1.06 to 7.54 per 100,000 across the Gulf, largely reflecting differences in registration and diagnostics, not true disease burden.
  • Estimated costs of hemophilia A in the MENA region reach up to $870,000 per patient per year.

Our multistakeholder panel of hematologists, policymakers and patient advocates mapped the journey from diagnosis to long-term care.

Our priorities for health systems:

  • Hub-and-spoke centers of excellence. Saudi Arabia’s regional network led to a threefold increase in bleeding disorder detection.
  • National registries to support forecasting, procurement and real-world evidence.
  • Unified national and regional guidelines to reduce variability without heavy manpower demands.
  • Real-world outcomes linked to reimbursement. Coordinated data could strengthen collective negotiating power, but it requires investment in interoperable digital infrastructure.
  • Gulf-specific health economic evidence (budget impact, cost-utility, resource use).

As a health economist, I believe policy change happens when solutions are practical, quantifiable and easy to act on.”
