Faizan Khan։ The Worldwide Burden of Venous Thromboembolism
Faizan Khan, Certified Laboratory Technician (PGDMLT) at Manipal TRUtest, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Nature Reviews Cardiology, adding:
”Truly honoured to be a coauthor on a major review published today in Nature Reviews Cardiology — the first systematic effort in a decade to summarize evidence on the worldwide burden of Venous Thromboembolism and associated clinical outcomes.
In 2019 alone, approximately 1.6 million new cases of Pulmonary Embolism and approximately 2.5 million new cases of Deep Vein Thrombosis occurred globally.
The impact of these conditions extends beyond the acute event to include recurrence, chronic complications, and treatment-related risks — collectively representing a cumulative burden similar to that of other major cardiovascular diseases.
Our analysis also highlights significant geographic disparities in reported estimates of VTE burden and the availability of high-quality epidemiological data. This underscores an urgent need for improved surveillance and coordinated international efforts to guide prevention and policy.
On a personal note, this publication is particularly meaningful as it incorporates work from my PhD thesis. It is incredibly rewarding to see my doctoral research represented alongside contributions from so many experts/leaders in the field, including Jeff Weitz, Harlan Krumholz, Jean Connors, Mary Cushman, Ander (Alexander) Cohen, Stefano Barco, and Erik Klok.
