Mateo Marin-Cuartas: What Matters After Aortic Valve Replacement in Younger Patients?

Mateo Marin-Cuartas, Cardiac Surgeon at German Heart Center of the CharitĂ©, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in EHJ – Valvular and Structural Heart Disease, adding:

“Beyond survival: how should we interpret patient-reported outcomes and health status after aortic valve replacement in younger patients?

In our new publication in the European Heart Journal – Valvular and Structural Heart Disease (EHJVSHD) from European Society of Cardiology, Milan Milojevic, Nikolaos Bonaros and I discuss the latest NOTION-2 health-status analysis comparing TAVI and SAVR in younger, low-risk patients.

Some important messages:

  • At 3 years, patient-reported outcomes are similarly favorable after TAVI and SAVR. But for a younger patient, 3 years is a milestone-not the final destination.
  • Quality of life matters. But so do durability, reintervention, major clinical events, coronary access, and future treatment options.
  • The real challenge: achieving not only a good recovery today, but durable health and quality of life over a lifetime.

Special thanks to Prof. Marco Metra EiC of EHJVSHD, for the invitation to contribute with this editorial comment.”
