Lesley Van Wyk: JAMA – A Newly Identified Blood Group System

Lesley Van Wyk, Laboratory Manager at National Health Laboratory Service, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Tosti J. Mankelow et al, published in Vox Sanguinis, adding:

“JAMA (ISBT 049): A NEW BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM!

Immunohematology continues to evolve!

A study published in Vox Sanguinis (2026) describes the newly identified JAMA blood group system and its high-prevalence antigen, JIMI (JAMA1), carried on the JAM-A protein and encoded by the F11R gene.

An especially interesting finding is that the identified antibody recognizes JAM-A on both red blood cells and platelets, opening new avenues for research in transfusion medicine.

Although its clinical significance remains to be fully established, this discovery highlights the importance of integrating conventional serology with advanced molecular techniques.”
