Halimat Olaniyan: The Role of Transfusion Medicine in Sickle Cell Disease Care

Halimat Olaniyan, Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking Fellow at University of Illinois Chicago, Research Scholar at American Society of Hematology, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today.

September has been a month of education, advocacy, and reflection around sickle cell disease.

I’m honored to be closing out UI Health’s Sickle Cell Awareness Month webinar series.

As a Transfusion Medicine fellow at UIC, I have the privilege of seeing firsthand how transfusion support can be a critical part of caring for patients living with sickle cell disease: from preventing and managing alloimmunization and transfusion reactions to navigating complex transfusion needs and optimizing red blood cell exchanges.

But for me, this work is also personal.

As someone living with sickle cell disease, I understand the patient experience behind the laboratory results, transfusion history, and clinical decisions.

Being able to stand on the other side of that experience is something I do not take for granted.

I’m grateful to UI Health for creating space for patients, families, healthcare professionals, and community members to learn together throughout this month.

Here’s to ending September with education, advocacy, and a continued commitment to improving access and outcomes for people living with sickle cell disease.

Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
