Konstantin Yenkoyan: When Science Steps Outside the Laboratory – ERNA 2026
Konstantin Yenkoyan, Scientist in Chief at Cobrain Center, Vice Rector for science at Yerevan State Medical University named after Mkhitar Heratsi, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When Science Steps Outside the Laboratory: European Researchers’ Night in Armenia 2026
Science has its greatest impact not only when discoveries are made, but also when knowledge becomes accessible, understandable, and capable of awakening curiosity.
At ERNA (European Researchers’ Night in Armenia) 2026, the Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) team had the opportunity to bring biomedical science and neuroscience directly to the public – especially to children and young people.
From exploring the brain and human anatomy to looking through a microscope, discussing cardiovascular and liver physiology, and discovering how scientists study health and disease, visitors could interact with science rather than simply hear about it.
What I particularly enjoyed was seeing our young researchers on the other side of the table – explaining, demonstrating, answering questions, and sharing their own enthusiasm for science.
Public engagement is not separate from research. It is part of building a scientific culture. A child who touches a brain model, looks through a microscope, or asks a scientist ‘why?’ may not become a researcher tomorrow – but that moment of curiosity matters.
And perhaps this is where the next generation of scientists begins: not with knowing all the answers, but with discovering that it is exciting to ask questions.
My sincere thanks to Mariam Movsisyan, Katarine Fereshetyan, Ani G., Hamlet Torosyan, Ruben Minasyan, Armen Markosyan, Knara Merdinyan, Sona Grigoryan, Toma Hakobyan, Manik Gemilyan, our cardiology team, and the many other colleagues and young researchers from YSMU and YSMU COBRAIN who brought science closer to the public and made our participation possible.
P.S. The ERNA project, coordinated by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, was selected for funding under the MSCA amp; Citizens 2025 call launched by the European Commission and is funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).
