”How much do we really know about the global burden of venous thromboembolism?
A new paper in Nature Portfolio Reviews Cardiology, led by Behnood Bikdeli, provides a contemporary assessment of VTE worldwide – including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism – while highlighting major gaps in the data available across countries and regions.
The review estimates that in 2019 there were approximately 2.5 million new cases of DVT and 1.6 million new cases of PE worldwide. But reliable, comparable data remain limited in many parts of the world, making it difficult to fully understand the true global impact of thrombosis.
More than a decade after World Thrombosis Day helped call attention to gaps in global VTE data, this research reinforces the need for stronger, more consistent surveillance. Better data can help us better understand where the burden is greate.”
