Mohammad Nafeli Shahrestani: CXCL10 Associated With Increased Long-Term Risk of Ischemic Stroke

Mohammad Nafeli Shahrestani, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Miami Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute, Medical Doctor at Private Practice, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Translational Stroke Research, adding:

“I’m glad to share that our new article has been published in Translational Stroke Research. We performed a large-scale but immune-focused screening of plasma immune markers in the Northern Manhattan Study (NOMAS).

Machine learning-assisted data reduction identified C-X-C motif chemokines as candidate markers of stroke risk. One standard deviation (SD) increase in baseline plasma C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) was associated with a 20% greater risk of all-cause and ischemic stroke over more than a decade of follow-up.

This association was independent of sociodemographic factors, cardiovascular risk factors, comorbidities, MRI-measured white matter disease, and kidney function. The results were internally validated.

CXCL10, a chemokine induced by interferon gamma (IFN-γ), may play a direct role in stroke pathogenesis.

Our findings suggest that CXCL10 is a marker of cerebrovascular disease and may add prognostic value when integrated with clinical, imaging, and laboratory assessments. CXCL10 may also be a target for pharmacological intervention to preserve cerebrovascular health.

I am grateful to all NOMAS participants, my mentors, and my co-authors.”
