Cihan Ay: Honouring Eric Kandel and Eugene Braunwald at the Medical University of Vienna

Cihan Ay, Professor of Haematology at Medical University of Vienna, shared on LinkedIn:

“A very special moment at the Medical University of Vienna this week: the opening of the new Eric Kandel Institute – Center for Precision Medicine and the Center for Translational Medicine, including the new Eugene Braunwald Auditorium.

For me, this occasion carries a particularly deep meaning.

Both Eric Kandel and Eugene Braunwald were born in Vienna in 1929 and were forced to flee the city with their families following the Anschluss in 1938. Decades later, their names have returned to Vienna – now standing for scientific excellence, innovation and an extraordinary legacy in medicine.

I was particularly touched by the inauguration of the Eugene Braunwald Auditorium.

Prof. Braunwald is one of the true giants of modern medicine and a pioneer of modern cardiology. I had the privilege of meeting him personally at ESC Congresses and at ISTH 2015 Congress in Toronto – encounters I remember very fondly.

As a physician and researcher working at the interface of thrombosis and cardiovascular disease, I have always been particularly inspired by his vision of the close relationship between thrombosis, platelets and cardiovascular disease – what has become known as ‘thrombo-cardiology’.

It was also a great honour when Prof. Braunwald cited one of our publications on factor XI inhibition in a 2022 European Heart Journal commentary on factor XI inhibitors.

Standing beside his statue at my own university felt especially meaningful.

There is something deeply moving about this story: people who were once forced to leave Vienna are now being honoured here, at the heart of the Medical University of Vienna, and their legacy is inspiring and helping shape the future of medicine.

It is a privilege to be part of the Medical University of Vienna at such an important moment.”
