Moustafa Abdou: LE Cells and the Early Diagnosis of Lupus
Moustafa Abdou, Author and Founder of AskHematologist.com, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Before modern autoantibody testing, one unusual cell helped reveal the presence of lupus.
LE cells are typically neutrophils that have engulfed denatured nuclear material, producing a characteristic homogeneous inclusion.
First described in 1948, they became an important historical finding associated with systemic lupus erythematosus.
Although LE-cell testing has largely been replaced by ANA, anti-dsDNA, and other immunologic tests, the phenomenon remains valuable for understanding the history and morphology of autoimmune disease.”
