Vipin M. Vashishtha: Mild COVID-19 and Malaria Leave Measurable Fingerprints on the Clotting System

Vipin M. Vashishtha, Past Covener, ACVIP IAP at Indian Academy of Pediatrics, shared a post on X about a recent article by Erens Spiff Ekprikpo et al., published in PLOS Global Public Health, adding:

“Even mild infections can leave measurable fingerprints on the blood-clotting system.

A case-control study of 220 adults in Nigeria compared mild COVID-19, malaria, co-infection and healthy controls.

All three infected groups showed increased platelet-size variability, while D-dimer levels were highest in people with both infections. Clotting-related markers also showed sex-specific differences.

Two very different pathogens — a virus and a parasite — can disturb the body’s clotting balance, and when they strike together, the effects on clot formation and breakdown may be greater.

Why it matters: In malaria-endemic regions, even apparently mild infections may alter haemostasis. However, this small observational study measured biomarkers—not clinical clotting events—so it does not establish that these changes cause thrombosis.”
