Syed Ahmed: Viral Triggers of Immune Thrombocytopenia and Thrombosis
Syed Ahmed, Medical Doctor, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Natural infection with Human Adenovirus B3 (HAdV-B3) can trigger immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis.
This condition is rare but may be life threatening.
The lymphocytes produce antibodies against the Adenovirus core protein pVII and these antibodies cross react with the platelet factor 4 antigen due to molecular mimicry and somatic hypermutation.
Similar effects have been rarely noticed with certain adenovirus vectors used as vaccine carriers resulting in thrombosis and thrombocytopenia called Vaccine induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis or VITT.
Note that some other DNA viruses, including Herpes virus and VZV virus can also cause thrombosis and thrombocytopenia. VZV trigeminal infection can be associated with carotid vasculopathy and vasculitis and may cause stroke which may happen up to several months after the initial shingles episode.”
