Akram Farhadi: Anemia and Low Hemoglobin Associated With Higher Risk of Osteosarcopenia in Older Adults

Akram Farhadi, Associate Professor, Head of The Persian Gulf Tropical Medicine Research Center at Bushehr University of Medical Sciences, and Ali Jamshidi, Doctoral Candidate at The University of Auckland, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Archives of Osteoporosis, adding:

“I’m pleased to share our publication examining the relationship between anemia, hemoglobin level, and osteosarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults in the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) Program.

In this cross-sectional study of 2,398 older adults, we found that:

  • 22.3 percent of participants had osteosarcopenia
  • 9.1 percent had anemia
  • Lower hemoglobin levels were significantly associated with osteosarcopenia
  • Older adults with anemia had a higher likelihood of osteosarcopenia after adjustment for potential confounders

These findings highlight the potential clinical importance of routine hemoglobin assessment in older adults and suggest that early identification and management of anemia may contribute to better musculoskeletal health in later life.

This work adds to the growing evidence on the interconnected nature of bone health, muscle health, and hematologic status in aging populations.”
