Khaled Musallam: Longevity and Healthy Aging in Thalassemia
Khaled Musallam, Group Chief Research Officer at Burjeel Holdings, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Wiley Online Library, adding:
“Longevity medicine is rapidly becoming a major focus of biomedical science, attracting growing attention, investment, and innovation.
But what does longevity really mean for people living with rare genetic diseases?
In our latest paper in the American Journal of Hematology, we reflect on this question through the lens of thalassemia, a lifelong genetic disorder in which disease biology begins long before conventional aging takes its toll.
As novel disease modifying and curative therapies transform survival, we explore the different clocks of aging and why extending lifespan does not necessarily translate into improved healthspan.
Perhaps the next frontier in rare diseases is not simply helping patients live longer, but ensuring they age healthier.”
