Pedro Perez: Florida’s Push to Strengthen VTE Prevention

Pedro Perez, Southeast Vascular Sales Manager at Argon Medical Devices, Inc., shared a post on LinkedIn:

“96,416 Blood Clot Encounters in One Year. Are We Doing Enough to Prevent the Next One?

While advances in thrombectomy and anticoagulation continue to transform VTE care, one of the most important developments may be happening outside the procedure room.

Florida’s first statewide VTE analysis, released in June 2026, identified 96,416 healthcare encounters involving blood clots across 16.4 million records. These represent encounters, not individual patients.

The Emily Adkins Family Protection Act is helping shift the focus toward prevention, early recognition, and accountability.

The legislation establishes standardized VTE risk-assessment requirements, healthcare staff education, and statewide reporting to better understand DVT and PE incidence, treatment, and outcomes.

The bigger picture: Technology saves lives, but identifying patients at risk before a clot becomes life-threatening may be equally transformative.

As we continue advancing VTE treatment, we must also strengthen prevention, patient education, and early diagnosis.

Could standardized VTE screening and statewide surveillance ultimately save as many lives as the technologies we develop to treat blood clots?”
