Paula Alonso-Frías: Human Umbilical Cord Blood Platelet-Rich Plasma for Endometrial Regeneration

Paula Alonso-Frías, PhD candidate at IVI Foundation, shared Reproductive BioMedicine Online’s post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online, adding:

“Our first multicentre clinical study on human umbilical cord blood platelet-rich plasma (hUC-PRP) for endometrial regeneration is now published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online.

I’m very proud to have been part of this work, in which we explored the potential of hUC-PRP to improve the endometrium in women with conditions such as Asherman’s syndrome, endometrial atrophy and thin endometrium.

Alongside the clinical outcomes, we investigated vascular and molecular changes to better understand the mechanisms that may contribute to endometrial improvement following treatment.

There’s still a lot to discover, but research like this brings us one step closer to understanding the potential of regenerative approaches for patients with limited treatment options.

A special thank you to Irene Cervelló Alcaraz for her guidance and support, to IVI Foundation for supporting this research, and to the whole team who made this work possible!”

Reproductive BioMedicine Online shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This paper presents the first-in-human, multicentre pilot study evaluating hysteroscopic subendometrial human umbilical cord blood platelet-rich plasma (hUC-PRP) injection in women with refractory Asherman’s syndrome (AS), endometrial atrophy (EA) or thin endometrium (TE).

By integrating extensive proteomic and metabolomic characterisation of hUC-PRP with clinical, vascular and transcriptomic endometrial analyses, this study offers a novel regenerative approach for female patients with infertility-related endometrial disorders, which suffer from a lack of gold-standard treatments.

The author team, led by Paula Alonso-Frías, demonstrate that hUC-PRP administration is associated with improvements in endometrial thickness, endometrial pattern, and neoangiogenesis. Transcriptomic changes consistent with enhanced proliferation, angiogenesis, hormone responsiveness, and ECM-remodelling suggest activation of a reparative endometrial environment.

The consistent, growth factor–rich composition of hUC-PRP, together with its effects across different endometrial pathologies, supports its biological relevance and provides a rationale for further investigation as a potential regenerative approach in endometrial disorders.

Published open access, the paper can be read in full for free from our in-press articles section now.”
