Erin VanDyke: Shifting Attention Upstream in VTE Care Through NBCA Centers of Excellence

Erin VanDyke, Vice President of National Blood Clot Alliance Centers of Excellence, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Pulmonary embolism (PE) often takes the spotlight in venous thromboembolism (VTE) discussions, and understandably so—it is frequently life-threatening. But the most common precursor to PE is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and this is where we have a real opportunity to intervene earlier.

  • Up to 50% of patients with PE also have concomitant DVT
  • An estimated 900,000 Americans are affected by VTE each year, with 100,000+ deaths annually—many preventable

Despite these numbers, resources and infrastructure to support DVT identification, follow-up, and longitudinal care remain limited compared to PE. Clinical pathways vary widely, and standardized approaches are often lacking.

National Blood Clot Alliance is leading national efforts across the full VTE disease state—PE and DVT alike. Through initiatives like the NBCA Centers of Excellence program, we are partnering with hospitals and clinical teams to:

  •  Standardize care protocols
  •  Strengthen follow-up pathways
  • Provide education and resources that support providers and patients across the spectrum of VTE

We encourage centers to explore the NBCA COE program and stay tuned for new initiatives launching to support community DVT centers.

Our collective challenge—and opportunity—is to shift attention upstream. By addressing DVT earlier and more consistently, we can reduce downstream PE and ultimately save lives.”
