Mohd J. Maaita: The Classic Golf Ball Appearance in Hemoglobin H Disease
Mohd J. Maaita, Clinical Pathologist-Hematologist at Jordanian Royal Medical Services, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Recently, a hematologist colleague consulted me to evaluate an interesting case.
First, we examined the routine blood film, which showed microcytic hypochromic red blood cells with prominent target cells. This strongly pointed us toward a thalassemia.
Next to definitively confirm the diagnosis, we ordered an HPLC test, which confirmed the presence of alpha thalassemia Hemoglobin H (HbH) disease.
With the diagnosis already established, we decided out of pure scientific curiosity to perform a supravital stain on the patient’s blood.
That is when the smear beautifully revealed the classic (golf ball) appearance.
I will leave you with this beautiful picture of the classic golf ball appearance.”
