Ilenia Calcaterra: Patient Blood Management Across Complex Hematological Conditions
Ilenia Calcaterra, Consultant Physician in Internal Medicine and Assistant Professor at the University of Naples Federico II, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Three patients. Three clinical stories. One common challenge: going beyond anemia.
A wonderful experience today in Rome, on the occasion of the XXIX SISET National Congress, where I had the pleasure of talking about Patient Blood Management with a perspective that was perhaps a little different from the usual.
‘From Iron Deficiency Correction to Hemostasis Control: The Integrated PBM Approach.’
I chose to tell this theme through three clinical stories: a woman with von Willebrand’s disease and heavy menstrual bleeding, a patient with hemophilia and major comorbidities, and a patient with Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia and chronic renal failure.
Three apparently different scenarios, but united by the same need: not to limit oneself to correcting a laboratory parameter, but to take care of the person in his or her complexity.
Because Patient Blood Management is not just about optimizing hemoglobin.
It means recognizing and treating iron deficiency early, controlling the risk of bleeding, integrating scientific evidence into therapeutic decisions and, above all, improving clinical outcomes and quality of life.
Beyond hemoglobin. Beyond bleeding. Towards patient-centered care.
Special thanks to Prof. Massimo Franchini for moderating the session, to Kedrion Biopharma for the opportunity and to all the colleagues present for their attention, interest and beautiful scientific discussion.
It is always a great satisfaction when research, clinical experience and dialogue between specialists meet.
Because the ultimate goal is not simply to treat anemia or prevent bleeding.
It is to improve patients’ lives.”
