Pranjal Patil: Anemia – Are We Treating the Cause or Just the Symptoms?
Pranjal Patil, Clinical Elective at HCA Healthcare, shared Sneha Yadav‘s post on LinkedIn, adding:
“This report will always hold a special place in my heart.
During my internship, I witnessed young women being prescribed iron supplements without always knowing the underlying cause of their anemia.
It made me question something: Why are we treating the deficiency without always understanding its cause? And why, despite so many iron supplementation programmes, does anemia continue to remain such a major public health challenge in India?
I knew we needed to look deeper.
This report is an attempt to go beyond iron supplementation and explore the root causes of anemia, tailored to the Indian population and its unique demographic and nutritional profile.
Special thanks to Sneha Yadav ma’am and The Rise! It would’ve been impossible without their unwavering support, guidance, and faith in me.
I’m truly grateful to have had their mentorship throughout this journey.
Personally for me, this is more than just a research project. It is an answer to my question, and a solution that can make a difference we’ve been longing for as physicians.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful research begins with a simple question: Are we truly treating the cause, or just the symptoms?”
Sneha Yadav, Editorial Lead at The Rise, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In India, anemia is one of the biggest public health challenges, with 57% of women and nearly two-thirds of children affected by it. Its effects go far beyond low hemoglobin levels, leading to poor maternal and newborn outcomes and reduced productivity.
Despite decades of implementing national policies, anemia continues to remain widespread because it has been treated as a single condition, while in reality it has multiple causes that are at times overlooked by policymakers.
The need of the hour lies in shifting gears from a predominantly iron-centred programme to one that is precise, data-driven, and community-owned.
Read the comprehensive report by Pranjal Patil.”
